Who is the Best Fly Half in the World?

The best men’s rugby players in the all important Number 10 position

Arguably the most instrumental position on the pitch, rugby’s number 10 orchestrates the link between the forwards and releases the backs to create some magic. Couple that with a need to kick through the eye of the needle, making the number 10 position extremely important to have world-class skill with hands and feet.

Men’s International rugby is an incredibly competitive landscape right now, but for the pivotal fly half position we have to look to the Northern Hemisphere where the best 10s in the world are all currently plying their trade.

Romain Ntamack, France

Anybody who can compete with the fantastic Mathieu Jalibert for the French 10 shirt – and win – is worthy of inclusion on this list. Paired with the electric Antoine Dupont at both club and country, Ntamack has been the lynchpin of an exhilarating French attack as they head into a home World Cup as one of the firm favourites.

Aged just 23, Ntamack has been a steadfast presence in France’s line-up throughout some remarkable achievements, including a Six Nations Grand Slam and a comprehensive win over New Zealand in Paris.

Speaking of which, who could forget this incredible addition to the young out-half’s highlight reel?

Johnny Sexton, Ireland

He may be 37 years old, but the Ireland and Leinster captain is in the form of his life. Throughout the last 12 months, Ireland earned their spot as World No. 1 with a perfect Grand Slam finish in the 2023 Six Nations, which underpinned a historic series win on New Zealand soil, and a clean sweep of Autumn Internationals in 2022.

At the heart of it all was veteran fly half Johnny Sexton, Leinster and Ireland captain and arguably one of the best players to ever grace the pitch. Instrumental in Ireland’s free-flowing and devastating attack, as well as a reliable force off the tee, Sexton is proving he still is one of the greatest ever fly halfs to play the game.

Finn Russell, Scotland

A diamond in the rough of a Lions tour to forget, Scotland’s out-half has continued to be a marvel to watch throughout last season and across this year’s Six Nations.

His maverick style of high-risk, high-reward play as well as his cheeky persona get most of the attention, but behind the flash lies an incredibly level-headed number 10 with one of the best tactical boots in the game.

The Racing 92 man is headed to Bath Rugby for the 2023/24 season on a massive £1M contract, and it will be a delight to see him light up the Premiership with skills like these:
