How Do I Care For My Rugby Ball?

Good quality rugby balls can be a pretty big investment, especially if you’re a grassroots rugby club having to buy lots of rugby balls throughout the season for multiple squads. That’s why it’s important to make your rugby balls last as long as possible. This rugby ball care guide will help you keep your rugby ball in tip top condition.

Rugby ball inflation & air pressure

Treat it like the economy; too much and it can burst, too little is bad too. To inflate your ball, use a hand pump and avoid air compressor pumps to maintain more control and reduce risk of overinflation. Think of it as an extra workout.

  • Pull your rugby ball into shape

  • Moisten needle and insert into the valve

  • Inflate to 9.5 psi (0.6 Bar)

Do not over inflate your rugby ball as it will lose its optimal shape and will not return to normal.

How to properly store a rugby ball

W RUGBY balls should be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and high temperatures when not in use. This ensures that the rugby ball bladder remains intact internally and avoids discolouration of the ball externally. It also stops the ball from damage and deformation making it last much longer.

How to clean your rugby ball

This one is arguably the most important and the one that people do the least. No one wants to clean rugby balls after a game, but it’s the secret to extending the life of the ball. Make sure your rugby ball is never stored away whilst still wet or damp. Cleaning the ball will also ensure that the grip will remain in peak condition.

  • After use, wipe your ball with a damp cloth

  • Use a small amount of soap to get rid of stubborn marks or mud

  • Pat the ball dry using a clean, dry towel and store as above

This is also the perfect way to make sure that your rugby ball doesn’t retain water and become heavy and unplayable.
