Who is the Best Winger in World Rugby?

The best men’s players playing on the wing right now

As the game’s top try scorers, wingers tend to get more attention than most when it comes to rugby accolades. With international rugby more competitive than it’s ever been and a World Cup on the horizon, we take a look at the players currently lighting up the turf with power, pace, and finishing abilities.

Ange Capuozzo, Duhan van der Merwe, and Emilano Boffelli top our list of the best rugby wingers in the world for the men’s game right now.

Ange Capuozzo, Italy

Ange Capuozzo best rugby winger in the world

Maybe it’s cheating to include a man who has played most of his international games at full-back, but the Toulouse winger has been absolutely electric for an Italian team that have notched up a series of historic wins of late.

One of these wins was a first ever victory over Australia, a game in which Capuozzo scored two tries. The other? A dramatic end to Italy’s 40-game Six Nations losing streak – and to say that Capuozzo played a part in the winning try would be the world’s biggest understatement, just check out the video below.

It’s fair to say that Ange was well deserving of his 2022 Breakout Player of the Year award.

Duhan van der Merwe, Scotland

best rugby winger in the world

Scotland and British & Irish Lions wing Duhan van der Merwe may be a South African native, but his nickname of “Irn Du” and his 16 tries in 25 international games make him as Scottish as neeps and tatties.

At 1.93m (6’4”) and 106kg (234lb), van der Merwe isn’t exactly your trademark nippy little winger, but make no mistake; he might be built like a tank, but he moves like a Ferrari.

Just watch the blonde bombshell absolutely decimate England with an unbelievable solo try in the 2023 Calcutta Cup – and be sure to look out for his deft switch of the ball while fending a massive loose forward at the same time.

Emiliano Boffelli, Argentina

Argentina’s Emiliano Boffelli has been tearing it up for Edinburgh Rugby in the URC and for Argentina on the international stage. He might be a utility back rather than an out-and-out winger, but to exclude international rugby’s top scorer of 2022 would be remiss to say the least.

Boffelli played on the wing in both Argentina’s historic away win in New Zealand and their victory over England at Twickenham, scoring 25 of Argentina’s 30 points in the latter game and hammering what proved to be the penultimate nail into Eddie Jones’s coffin.
