Rebels snatch draw against Brumbies
Melbourne Rebels vs Brumbies // Friday 11th March // AAMI Park, VIC
The Rebels snatched a draw at the death in a match where both sides were looking to bounce back from heavy defeats in round 1.
After an early yellow card, the Rebels had to front up in defence under sustained pressure from the Brumbies. Eventually the pressure told, with Number 8 Rebecca Smyth crashing over for the first points of the game on 27 minutes.
The try was unconverted, and the Brumbies left wondering whether they could have converted pressure into more points on the board from the opening half an hour.
After some exciting exchanges between the two sides, a yellow card for the Brumbies, and two missed penalties from the Rebels, the score remained 5-0 at the interval.
The Rebels took advantage of their player advantage early in the second half, with Michaela Maunsell carrying over from short range. The conversion hit the post leaving the score all square with most of the second half to play.
Jemima McCalman, who scored twice in Round 1, then showed superb pace and guile to take the Brumbies back into the lead on 55 minutes with a converted try. The game continued to swing back and forth, with the Rebels scoring next courtesy of Ashley Marsters which was again unconverted.
McCalman was involved yet again in the next Brumbies try, breaking the line superbly off first phase ball which eventually led to Biola Dawa touching down in the corner.
The game looked all but over with 1 minute left on the clock and Brumbies in possession. However, they conceded a penalty in their own 22 and the Rebels took full advantage. A quick tap penalty led to Eirenei Nanai scoring with the clock in stoppage time, and Georgia Cormick converted with the last kick of the game. The Rebels celebrated as if it was a win in one of the most exciting finishes we’ve seen in Super W.
Drua building their reputation as title contenders after convincing win over Reds.
Queensland Reds v Fijiana Drua // Saturday 12th March // Suncorp Stadium, QLD
Having watched the Fijiana Drua take the Rebels apart in Round 1 in their debut fixture of the competition, a match against one of the top teams in the Super W was a mouth-watering prospect.
The fixture didn’t disappoint, with both sides showing intensity and quality in the early exchanges. Ivania Wong showed great pace to score the first points of the game in the corner.
The Drua fought back however, with a charged down kick followed up with some fast phase play which eventually lead to lock Doreen Narokete touching down and levelling up the scores. 2 minutes later, the competition debutants scored again through spinning the ball wide into the hands of Vitalina Naikore who accelerated past the scrambling defence to make it 12-5 at the break.
Jade Coates then scored early in the second half through some excellent play spreading the ball wide with pace and precision. Radiniyavuni provided Naikore’s second try of the afternoon through an excellent break. Vika Matarugu then backed up last weeks’ try with another score as the game began to open up a bit more.
The win and bonus point was in the bag for the Drua, and the Reds nabbed a consolation try late on through Ellie Draper, who pounced on a ball that was spilled by in a tackle and sped over the line. The try was converted to take the final score to 12-27 to the Fijiana Drua.
The Fijiana Drua look like the team to beat right now, and it already feels like their match-up against the Waratahs on thr 1st April will be one worth tuning in for.
Tahs hold on to beat Force and preserve unbeaten Super W Record
NSW Waratahs vs Western Force // Sunday 13th March // Leichhardt Oval, NSW
After a win against the Brumbies, the Waratahs were looking to build some momentum against the Force.
They started strongly, with Mahalia Murphy showing great pace to score with under 2 minutes on the clock, which was convered by Piliae.
This looked like an ominous start for the Force, however they found themselves back all square at 7-7 when a delayed Tahs pass allowed Ariana Hira to intercept and score under the posts.
The Tahs then regained some pressure and momentum, and spun wide to Margot Vella who scored in the corner. Pauline Piliae slotted the conversion beautifully from the touchline to make it 14-7. Those were to be the last points scored in the first half, and the Tah’s were up against it after Captain Katrina Barker was to the sin bin with 5 minutes to play.
The Force struck early into the second half with their player advantage, tighthead prop Raewyn Tuheke finally getting over the line after some good phases from the forwards. Everything to play for now at 14-14.
At 58 minutes, Force had their Captain Trilleen Pomare sent to the bin and the Tahs looked to take full advantage. Two tries were scored during the 10 minute sin bin, with Tuipulotu scoring in the corner after some great hands off a quick tap penalty.
O’Gorman scored 3 minutes later with one of the tries of the afternoon. She raced after a box kick that the Force didn’t deal with at all, gathered the ball and showed pace and poise to glide over and take the game away from the Force for good.
The Waratah’s secured a bonus point victory with a try whilst the clock was in the red, Pohiva diving over from short range. Final score 31-14.
