Reds snatch win through Liz Patu double
Brumbies vs Reds // Friday 18th March // GIO Stadium, ACT
After 20 scoreless minutes, the Brumbies broke the deadlock courtesy of a lineout maul from 5 metres out. Captain Rebecca Smyth was the try scorer, and the try was converted by Ashleigh Hewson from a tricky angle.
10 minutes later the Reds bounced back with a try of their own. After a few phases of play where the Reds seemed to have lost a bit of momentum due to an aggressive Rebels defence, Liz Patu picked up the ball from the base of a ruck and was unstoppable from short range. The try was left unconverted.
After some time in the Reds 22, the Brumbies earnt themselves a penalty that Hewson slotted through the posts to take the score to 10-5 at half time.
Brumbies started brightly in the first phases of the second half, showing their attacking intent from the first whistle. However, it was the Reds that scored next on 50 minutes – after a number of phases of tight forward play, Madi Schuck picked from the base of a ruck to score from close range and tie the game up at 10-10.
The Brumbies had some chances from open play but the Reds defence held firm, other than giving away a penalty of 55 minutes that Hewson was unable to convert.
With 10 minutes to go, the Reds built pressure in the Rebels 22 and with a player sent to the bin, Liz Patu was given the ball off a tap penalty and scored her second try of the afternoon. As with the first try, she is just unstoppable from close range.
Final score 15-10 to the Reds
45 first-half points from Drua secures convincing win over the Force
Melbourne Rebels vs Brumbies // Saturday 19th March // Leichhardt Oval, NSW
Fijiana Drua once again demonstrated their Super W title credentials by thumping Western Force through a superb first half performance.
The Drua scored an unconverted try in the first 5 minutes of the game through Vika Matarugu, and this was to be a sign of things to come for the remainder of the half. 10 minutes later, a quick tap penalty in the Force 22 led to the Drua scoring under the posts through some superb offload play. Teresia Tinanivalu was the player to score, with Merewalesi Rokouono adding the extras.
Raijieli Laqeretabua was next to score, again through quick ball and soft hands, converted again by Rokouono. Almost immediately after, the Drua added further points through Vitalina Naikore who had a clear run from almost halfway to glide over.
More of the same fast, offloading play from the Drua led to further tries from Kolora Lomani, Teresia Tinanivalu, and Timaima Ravisa. 45-0 to the Drua at half time.
The Force showed spirit to fight back in the second half, scoring 3 unanswered tries.
The first came through quite an unusual score, with the Force kicking for the corner and the Drua trying to keep the ball in play. They put the ball straight into the path of Zakiya Kereopa who gratefully scored an unconverted try.
The Force scored next through some close phase play from the forwards, with Rebecca Clough scoring from short range and the try left unconverted. The final try of the afternoon was scored by Huia Swannell, who bounced and spun off a couple of tackles to get over the line. Paihau Pomare added the conversion.
Final score 45-17 to the Drua
Waratahs thump Rebels in dominant performance from the champions
NSW Waratahs vs Melbourne Rebels // Saturday 19th March // SCG, NSW
The Waratahs ran riot on Saturday afternoon, thrashing the Rebels with an imperious performance at the SCG.
Mahalia Murphy continued her fine try scoring form after 4 minutes, showing great feet and turn of pace to score in the corner. Pauline Piliae added the conversion from a very tight angle.
After a free flowing move, Tatum Bird scored the next points from the left wing, gliding over with plenty of space in front of her.
The Rebels hit back with the next points, building phases and then crashing over through Janita Kareta to get the visitors onto the scoreboard with an unconverted try.
The next two tries came courtesy of Mahalia Murphy yet again, the first being scored in the left corner after some quick ball, the second outstanding. She picked the ball up on halfway and managed to glide through a gap before showing another change of pace and direction to bag her hattrick before half time. Score was 22-5 going into the break.
The Tah’s started the second half as they finished the first, with Vella picking up a loose ball and sprinting through from halfway. Eva Karpani scored next, showing great pace for a prop to charge over from 40 metres out. The next try came from a great wrap-around move with Tah’s outside centre Georgie Friedrichs scoring.
The Rebels scored next, again building phases and the try came from Janita Kareta, scoring her second of the afternoon.
The remainder of the fixture became a rout, with scores from Penelope Leiataua, Tatum Bird scoring her second try, and Mahalia Murphy adding 2 more to take her tally to 5 tries for the day.
