Drua make history and hand first ever Super W defeat to Waratahs
Fijiana Drua vs NSW Waratahs // Friday 1st April // Cbus Super Stadium, QLD
With both sides undefeated and targeting a Super W title, this was the most highly anticipated contest of the season so far, and did not disappoint.
The Drua started brightly, working through multiple phases and playing with the pace and intention that they have all season. Despite some strong tackling from the Tahs, the Drua scored after 6 minutes through Naikore, who picked the ball up wide and touched down in the corner for an unconverted try.
Following the try, the Waratahs looked to bounce back and were going through some phases before knocking on. Laqeretabua gathered the loose ball, threw a huge dummy to go through a gap in the defence and put Lomani in to score their second try.
15 minutes into the match was one of the tries of the afternoon, with beautiful offload play involving Drua backs and forwards leading to Ravisa crossing the whitewash.
It looked like the Drua were going to be out of sight if the momentum continued, but the Waratahs fought back. Friedrichs burst through a gap and put Lori Cramer in to score in the corner to give the Tahs some hope in the match. It was Cramer’s first game back for Waratahs after testing positive for Covid prior to Round 2.
Half time score was 17-5.
The Waratahs hope turned out to be unfounded, with the Drua getting the first points of the second half despite having a player in the Bin. Laqeretabua flew up in defence and intercepted a loose Waratahs pass to fly over uncontested from the halfway line, which was converted.
The rest of the half was nip and tuck, but with 5 minutes left he Waratahs scored. Tatum Bird’s incredible debut season continued as she dived over in the corner to get her third try in two Super W rounds.
Fijiana Drua responded with a score of their own and put the cherry on top of a very fruitful day in the office, Ravato receiving the ball off the back of a great Drua steal and sprinting over.
A huge statement win for the competition debutants, final score 29-10 to the Drua.
Reds dominate in convincing win over Rebels
Reds vs Rebels // Saturday 2nd April // Suncorp Stadium, QLD.
The Rebels dominated the opening 10 minutes of the game, and got a deserved try through Rowland from short range. Unfortunately for the Rebels, this score was to be their only points of the game and what followed by a thrashing from the Reds.
The Reds first came on the 20-minute mark from Nona, who threw a dummy and sliced through a gap in the defence to score under the posts for a converted try.
Next, Patu took a quick tap penalty and powered through 3 or 4 defenders to add another try to her tally in an impressive season. Nona turned creator next, picking up on a loose ball, flying through a gap and putting Ivania Wong in for her first try of the afternoon. The score stayed at 19-5 to the Reds at half time.
With both teams down to 14 players, the Reds scored 5 minutes into the second half after great offloading to allow Draper to run in under the posts unchallenged. Melanie Wilks then showed pace to glide through the Rebels defence before putting Wong into the corner with a one-handed offload.
Liz Patu then got her second try of the day, picking up the ball a metre out from the Rebels try-line and diving over to score. Greenhalgh was on the scoresheet next, with a loose kick from the Rebels being gathered by the Reds backline and eventually ending up in Greenhalgh’s hands to score.
Madi Schuck was then the catalyst for the next try, running around 40 metres to take the Reds close to the Rebels try line. After some further phases and brave defence from the Rebels, Codey held off two defenders to score.
The final try of the afternoon was Wong’s hattrick score, who seemingly created space out of nothing on the left wing and sprinted under the posts. Final score was 55-5 to the Reds.
Brumbies grasp first win against Force
Brumbies vs Western Force // Sunday 3rd April // Viking Park, ACT
The final match of the round between the Brumbies and Force saw two teams looking to achieve their first win of the season, and didn’t disappoint in a tight encounter.
Brumbies were first off the mark through a penalty try, after a lineout maul was collapsed by the Force defence. A nightmare start for the Force as the try was compounded by a yellow card.
The Force struck back after a poor error from the Brumbies on their own 5 metre line. The Force worked the ball through the phases and Galiki sliced through the defence for a superb try.
Hewson slotted a penalty for the Brumbies to take back the lead 10-7, before Kemp crashed over from short range after some strong phase play from the forwards. Half time score 15-7.
Brumbies got off to a fast start again in the second half, within 4 minutes Smyth picking from the base of the ruck, shrugging off a defender and crossing the whitewash.
Force got themselves back into the game again after the Brumbies conceded a penalty 10 metres from their own line. A quick tap penalty and multiple phases later, Kereopa scored in the corner with plenty to play for at 20-12 to the Brumbies.
However, the Brumbies extended their lead with 10 minutes left, spreading the ball from right to left and Derera gliding over for a converted try.
The Force brought some tension to the final stages of the game, scoring with 5 minutes left. Mason took a quick tap penalty and despite the scrambling Brumbies defence, after a couple of phases Putz squeezed over from short range for a converted try.
Force couldn’t get another score and the Brumbies secured their first win. Final Score 27-19.
