Waratahs thump long-standing rivals Reds 46-0

NSW Waratahs vs QLD Reds // Saturday 9th April // Eric Tweedale Oval, NSW

With the Waratahs coming into this match off the back of their first ever Super W defeat, and the Reds having hammered the Rebels, it was hard to say which way this match was going to go.

However, we did not have to wait for very long to find out – from the first whistle the Waratahs showed quality to beat the Reds comfortably.

The first try came within 5 minutes, the Tah’s getting through some quick phases in the Reds 22 and Georgie Friedrichs squeezing through the defence to dive over.

The next try came courtesy of the forwards 10 minutes later. It couldn’t have been simpler with a clean lineout from 5 metres out and a driving maul leading to Delamere scoring.

The pressure was constant from the Tah’s, the next try coming off the back of a great crashing run from Hamilton of the base of the scrum to gain momentum. A couple of phases later, Batibasaga darted over from short range as all good scrum halves do.

With 5 minutes left in the half, McKenzie sliced through the Reds defence and put Delamere in for the simplest of scores, her second try.

The Tah’s managed to score one more try with the clock in 1st half stoppage time, Naiqama diving over from short range. Half time score was 27-0 to the Waratahs.

The Reds would have wanted a second-half fightback, but it wasn’t to be with the Tah’s continuing to dominate for the remainder of the game. The first try came from Duck, who glided easily through a gap and showed pace to finish well.

Waratah’s right wing Vella then showed class with two tries, the final scores for the Waratahs. Vella firstly picked up a loose ball and somehow managed to navigate over the line, dodging 3 players as she went. The second was pure pace, Vella going from around 50 metres out for one of the best tries of the afternoon.

Final score was 46-0 to the Waratah’s, a very disappointing afternoon for the Reds where they would have been hoping for a much closer contest.

Drua complete clean sweep with win over Brumbies

Fijiana Drua vs Brumbies // Saturday 9th April // Suncorp Stadium, QLD.

The Fijiana Drua were looking to maintain their 100% record over a Brumbies side that have shown great fight and potential in this latest Super W campaign.

The Drua have been lighting up the competition with open, running rugby but showed much more direct play for their first try on 17 minutes. A scintillating line from Naikore took her within 5 metres, before some tight phase play led to Livia Naidei creeping over from short range.

The Brumbies were defending ferociously, but unfortunately had a player sin-binned on the 30 minute mark. The Drua were unable to exploit their one-player advantage and the scoreline at the break was 5-0.

10 minutes into the second half, Brumbies lost Ashleigh Hewson to the bin after what was judged to be a tackle with no arm-wrap. This time, the Drua took full advantage and scored almost immediately from a scrum 5 metres out, driving over and Tamoi getting the try which was converted.

The Brumbies fought back with 15 minutes to go, a quick tap penalty followed by a huge dummy from Huriwai who was driven over the line by her team mates. Score was 12-7 to the Drua with all to play for, the rain lashing down at the Suncorp stadium.

However, the Drua put the game to bed with a long lineout throw being picked up by Radiniyavuni at full tilt, who burst through 2 Brumbies defenders to score under the posts.

Final score was 17-7 to the Drua who chalked up another win. The Brumbies should be proud of the way they fought and were in contention for most of the game.

Western Force vs Rebels Postponed due to covid. Game set to be moved to another date.
